Description

Looking at the knight's facial expression leaves no doubt as to why this chess set is called Royal Guard. It appears that a watchful eye is on the lookout for any threats to the king's safety. While the knight's design looks basic at first, the carved lines resembling mane and face and the simplicity add to the aspects of a modern looking set. You see how the craftsmen bridge traditional Staunton design with modernity without digressing into unpleasant abstractness. The set's character is further substantiated by the bold design of the other pieces.

To enhance the contrast between white and black, the black pieces are crafted from high-grade boxwood which has been ebonised to give them their rich black colour. Almost similar in appearance to real ebony yet for a fraction of the price.

For the metrics of the pieces, you find the king stands at a height of 3.75" with a base diameter of 1.5". On the scale, the kings bring up 52g thanks to its double-weighting to allow for a firm stand on the board. If you are someone who likes a simple design with a modern touch while also paying attention to quality, then the Royal Guard chess pieces will do you justice. With their height of 3.75" they tower over smaller, cheaper pieces and stand proudly on the board. If you prefer natural wood colours over ebonised, you will be pleased to know that they also come in a Sheesham version.
